“Perilya understands the need to work with the communities near its operations, in particular, offering employment for local people, business opportunities for local business and working in partnership with local community programs.” Peter Eggleston - General Manager Sustainable Development
Perilya’s operations have a positive impact in regional Australia through employment, local purchasing of materials and services, and through taxes and royalties.
Perilya works closely with local suppliers, introducing them to our health, safety and environment standards, corporate technology and encouraging them to build on their skills and expertise which may enable them to compete successfully in state, national and global markets.
In regional communities like Broken Hill, corporate support for community organisations plays a key role in their success.
Perilya provides financial and in-kind support to a wide range of community initiatives in the areas of sport, health, environment, culture and education.
As part of Perilya’s focus on sustainability, the company has supported community health and safety initiatives including first aid training for high school students, financial support to the Royal Flying Doctor Service and deployed the company’s emergency response team in the community following a destructive storm at Broken Hill.
Critical components of Perilya’s consultation process are establishing stronger links with the community; understanding and addressing community views; and improving public access to the company’s information and activities.
Perilya actively meets with local decision makers, groups and individuals to address issues or concerns, report on activities and seek input from community members on planned activities that may impact on the community.
Feedback is also invited through a 1-800 telephone number and the company regularly reports activities through the media and on its website.
Community consultation has been undertaken on a number of environmental, health, heritage, social and economic issues.
A number of Perilya’s exploration activities are conducted on private land. Perilya takes responsibility for working with landholders to maintain and rehabilitate the land during and after exploration has taken place.
